Course: Product Design 4

10 weeks, 5 team members

April 2014 - July 2014

ASSIGNMENT

The starting point of this project was the received patent of a wooden hand washing machine. The goal was to redesign this patent into a successful, modern product.

CONCEPT

We chose to design for HEMA, a warehouse in the Netherlands. Through patent analysis, market research, brand analysis, form study and mechanical research we came up with a new concept. The machine has a helix shaped swing that can be moved over the diameter by a slit in the lid. The half cover can be turned around the border of the tub so that every place can be reached.

CHALLENGE

This project was mainly about Detail Design, we had to define the exact production methods, materials and costs of each part. I focused on the swing arm that moves the water inside the tub. The arm has a helix shape, therefore I did a lot of research on producing plastic helixes. I had contact with injection molding companies and mold designers. I learned a lot about the production of plastic objects. We also had to take into account the assembly which was a very complicated task, all team members had to coordinate with each other.
